Revora Spanish Open: Szolnoki falls as eight reach finals day
Holder Oliver Szolnoki lost 11-8 to Fabio Rizzi on Saturday night — eight men now play quarter-finals, two semi-finals and the final across Sunday in Gandia.
Defending champion Oliver Szolnoki's reign at the Revora Spanish Open ended on Saturday night, beaten 11-8 by Italy's Fabio Rizzi as the last 16 settled the eight-man field for Sunday's finals day in Gandia.
Rizzi's win headlined a session that produced two whitewashes: Mieszko Fortunski beat fellow Pole Mateusz Sniegocki 11-0 and home favourite Francisco Sanchez Ruiz dismissed Gabriel Aspholm 11-0. Euro Tour standings leader Wojciech Szewczyk edged Wiktor Zielinski 11-9 in an all-Polish tie, while Spain's Iker Andoni Echeverria beat Ramazan Dincer 11-7. Felix Vogel (11-8 over Yannick Pongers), Luca Menn (11-4 over Kristian Mrva) and Mika van Berkel (11-9 over Eric Mattern) completed the last eight.
Sunday's quarter-finals (10:00 local, race to 11): Szewczyk v Echeverria; Fortunski v Vogel; Menn v Sanchez Ruiz; van Berkel v Rizzi. The semi-finals follow at 13:00 and 16:00, with the final at 20:00 — all times Gandia.
Why it matters: With the holder gone at the season's final Euro Tour stop, standings leader Szewczyk becomes the man to beat — while Sanchez Ruiz and Echeverria carry two home hopes into the day the champion is crowned.
