Revora Spanish Open: last 16 set as Alcaide exits at home
Four Poles reach tonight's last 16 in Gandia — two of them paired into all-Polish ties — while home favourite David Alcaide falls to Mateusz Sniegocki.
David Alcaide's home run at the Revora Spanish Open ended on Saturday afternoon, beaten 11-8 by Poland's Mateusz Sniegocki as the last-32 round in Gandia settled the 16-man single-elimination field for tonight.
Sniegocki had only reached the knockout phase via the losers' side hours earlier. Defending champion Oliver Szolnoki of Hungary was taken to a decider by Roman Hybler, surviving 11-10, while Euro Tour standings leader Wojciech Szewczyk beat Jonas Souto 11-7. Yannick Pongers edged Tomasz Kaplan 11-10 in the other hill-hill finish, and Francisco Sanchez Ruiz advanced without completing a match — Marc Bijsterbosch forfeited.
Poland put four men into the last 16 — Szewczyk, Wiktor Zielinski, Mieszko Fortunski and Sniegocki — and the draw paired them into two all-Polish ties. Tonight's last 16 (9pm local, race to 11): Szewczyk v Zielinski; Ramazan Dincer v Iker Andoni Echeverria; Fortunski v Sniegocki; Pongers v Felix Vogel; Luca Menn v Kristian Mrva; Sanchez Ruiz v Gabriel Aspholm; Eric Mattern v Mika van Berkel; Fabio Rizzi v Szolnoki.
Why it matters: Gandia is the final Euro Tour stop of the season, so every surviving round moves the tour standings Szewczyk currently leads. Alcaide's exit removes the home crowd's biggest name before the Sunday business end — Daniel Maciol went the same way, beaten 11-7 by Aspholm — while Szolnoki's title defence stays alive by the width of one rack.
In the concurrent women's event the last 16 is now set. Oliwia Zalewska, Monika Zabek (7-6 over Angelina Lubinaz), Miriam Steiner, Oktawia Brodecka, Jolien Schuurman, Ana Gradisnik, Jiang Teng and Li Yongxi came through the afternoon's losers' qualification to join winners'-side qualifiers Pia Filler, Ina Kaplan, Silvia Lopez Fibla, Daria Siranchuk, Maria-Teresa Ropero, Linnea Hjalmarstrom, Marion Jude and Sandra Baumgartner. Tonight's last 16 (19:00 local, race to nine): Filler v Schuurman; Kaplan v Brodecka; Lopez Fibla v Zalewska; Siranchuk v Li; Ropero v Steiner; Hjalmarstrom v Zabek; Jude v Gradisnik; Baumgartner v Jiang.
