DOHA — Carlo Biado led a seven-strong Filipino charge into the Last 16 of the $450,000 Qatar World Cup 10-Ball on Tuesday night, ousting former US Open champion Francisco Sánchez Ruiz 11-6 at the Ezdan Palace Hotel as the knockout stage claimed another marquee name.

Defending champion Jonas Magpantay stayed on course with an 11-7 win over Alex Pagulayan, Rocky Tullao shaded Mario He 11-10, Miguel Salvilla edged Elliott Sanderson 11-10 and Jerico Bonus beat Wiktor Zielinski 11-9 — 24 hours after Zielinski had knocked out Kledio Kaci. Jundel Mazon ousted Juan Carlos Exposito 11-8 and Albert James Manas ended giant-killer Mustafa Alnar's run 11-5 to complete the septet.

Elsewhere, world No. 1 Wojciech Szewczyk routed last year's runner-up Szymon Kural 11-4, Joshua Filler saw off Olivér Szolnoki 11-8 and Fedor Gorst produced the day's most brutal scoreline, an 11-1 demolition of Mahmoud Charif. Vietnam's Dương Quốc Hoàng also advanced, eliminating Robbie Capito 11-6.

Why it matters: Seven of the 16 players still standing are Filipino — nearly half the field — and with Biado's statement win over Sánchez Ruiz added to Magpantay's steady title defence, the Philippines now sets the agenda heading into a Last 16 that still contains Szewczyk, Filler and Gorst ahead of Thursday's $100,000 final.
