DOHA — Defending champion Jonas Magpantay was knocked out of the Qatar World Cup 10-Ball on Wednesday, beaten 11-5 by world No. 1 Wojciech Szewczyk in a precise reversal of the Last-16 meeting the Filipino won by the same score on his way to last year's title.

Carlo Biado followed him out, going down 11-7 to Konrad Juszczyszyn, and Fedor Gorst fell on the hill, 11-10 to Taiwan's Chia Chen Hsieh, as the Last 16 cut the Filipino contingent from seven to two. Miguel Salvilla and AJ Manas kept the flag flying — Salvilla edging Jerico Bonus 11-9 and Manas beating Jundel Mazon 11-5 in all-Filipino derbies — while John Morra ended Rocky Tullao's run 11-9.

Joshua Filler saw off German compatriot Tobias Bongers 11-8 and Daniel Macioł stopped Vietnam's Dương Quốc Hoàng 11-6 to complete a quarter-final line-up of Szewczyk–Morra, Salvilla–Filler, Juszczyszyn–Macioł and Hsieh–Manas, played this afternoon in Doha.

Why it matters: The title race is suddenly wide open — the holder, Biado and Gorst all gone inside one session — and with an all-Polish quarter-final guaranteeing Szewczyk, Juszczyszyn or Macioł a semi-final spot, Poland now has the strongest hand. Salvilla and Manas are all that remain of the seven-strong Filipino charge.
